Thinking Like a Burglar
Burglars are opportunists. They look for the path of least resistance: an unlocked window, a dark alley, or a cheap cylinder lock that can be snapped in 10 seconds. The goal of home security isn't to build an impenetrable fortress—it is to make your property look too difficult and too risky to attempt.
Here are the most effective ways to upgrade your home security.
1. Upgrade to 3-Star Anti-Snap Locks
The vast majority of break-ins through UPVC and composite doors happen via a technique called "lock snapping." Using a pair of mole grips, a burglar can snap the protruding face off a standard Euro cylinder lock and manipulate the mechanism inside. The entire process takes less than 15 seconds.
You must replace standard locks with British Standard TS007 3-Star cylinders. These locks have an intentional weak point that snaps off safely if attacked, leaving the core mechanism locked and protected inside the door.
2. Reinforce Wooden Doors
If you have a traditional timber door, ensure it is fitted with a 5-lever mortice deadlock (British Standard 3621) located halfway down the door, complemented by a nightlatch higher up. To prevent the door frame from splintering under a kick attack, install a steel London Bar or Birmingham Bar to reinforce the frame and hinges.
3. Don't Forget the Windows
Ground-floor windows and accessible flat-roof windows are prime entry points. Ensure all windows are fitted with key-operated locks. For older sash windows, install sash stops to prevent the window from being opened wide enough for a person to climb through.
4. Smart Lighting and Surveillance
Darkness is a burglar's best friend. Install motion-sensor floodlights covering your front and back doors. Furthermore, modern smart doorbells (like Ring) act as excellent visible deterrents. Burglars will frequently ring the doorbell first to check if you are home; a smart doorbell allows you to answer from your phone, giving the illusion of occupancy.
5. Lock Away Tools and Ladders
Don't provide burglars with the tools they need to break in. Ensure your garden shed is secured with a heavy-duty closed-shackle padlock. Never leave ladders, hammers, or heavy tools lying around the garden.
